Understanding Medicare and Health Coverage

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, some younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Medicare Parts

Part A - Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.

Part B - Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical equipment, and preventive services.

Part C - Medicare Advantage

An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. Usually includes Part A, B, and D coverage.

Part D - Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps pay for prescription medications from participating pharmacies.

Who is Eligible?

Age 65 or older

Younger than 65 with certain disabilities

Any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Any age with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)

Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): 3 months before to 3 months after turning 65

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1 - March 31 each year

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 - December 7 each year

Medicare Costs

Medicare costs include premiums, deductibles, and copayments. Costs vary based on the type of coverage you choose.
